What lessons it might teach us? Community engagement in HIV research
Purpose of review Partnerships between academia and the community led to historic advances in HIV and paved the way for ongoing community engagement in research. Three decades later, we review the state of community engagement in HIV research, discuss best practices as supported by literature, explore innovations, and identify ongoing gaps in knowledge. Recent findings The community of people living with and at risk for HIV remains actively involved in the performance of HIV research. However, the extent of participation is highly variable despite long standing and established principles and guidelines of good partici...

Building a Successful Military-to-Military Partnership through Confronting HIV: the U.S.-Nigeria Experience.
Abstract The Nigerian Ministry of Defence-Walter Reed Army Institute of Research partnership was established in 2004 in response to the growing HIV/AIDS epidemic in Nigeria. Here we discuss the emergence of HIV in Nigeria, highlighting the initial barriers to treatment delivery, and outline the origins of the international military-to-military partnership developed to confront the disease. With financial support from the United States President's Plan for AIDS Relief and Nigerian Government Counterpart Funding, we demonstrate how this program led to a successful and sustainable response in the fight against HIV in...

Uptake, engagement, and adherence to pre-exposure prophylaxis offered after population HIV testing in rural Kenya and Uganda: 72-week interim analysis of observational data from the SEARCH study
This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT01864603.FindingsBetween June 6, 2016, and June 23, 2017, 70 379 community residents 15 years or older who had not previously been diagnosed with HIV were tested during population-level HIV testing. Of these individuals, 69 121 tested HIV-negative, 12 935 of whom had elevated HIV risk (1353 [10%] serodifferent partnership, 6938 [54%] risk score, 4644 [36%] otherwise self-identified risk). 3489 (27%) initiated PrEP, 2865 (82%) of whom did so on the same day as HIV testing and 1733 (50%) of whom were men. PrEP uptake was lower among individuals aged 15–24 years (ad...

Six Reasons That Justify A ‘Marriage Of Convenience’ Between HIV And Noncommunicable Disease Programs
Another round in the battle to end HIV/AIDS began on June 10, 2016, at United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York, when the HIV community adopted targets and actions to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030. For Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), which bears the largest burden of HIV deaths (800,000 in 2015), this is the promise of a new dawn. However, this ambitious goal to improve health for people with HIV will not be fully realized unless health systems in sub-Saharan Africa address another threat that looms large on the horizon: the growing epidemic of chronic noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). These include heart disease, respiratory...

Russia: Critics Continue To Attack “Hypocrisy” Over HIV/AIDS
By Pavol StracanskyMOSCOW, May 21 2014 (IPS) International bodies and local campaign groups have repeatedly criticised Russia for not doing anywhere near enough in terms of providing prevention services or access to medical treatment for HIV/AIDS sufferers. The fourth Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA) HIV/AIDS Conference, which finished in Moscow last week, has not put a stop to that criticism. Boycotted by many domestic and international organisations working with HIV/AIDS sufferers and those most at risk of contracting the disease, the conference – and the Russian authorities’ overall approach to HIV/AIDS – w...

We aimed to assess whether community-based HIV testing ...

Near real-time monitoring of HIV transmission hotspots from routine HIV genotyping: an implementation case study
We describe the implementation of an automated near real-time system to monitor and characterise HIV transmission hotspots in British Columbia, Canada. Methods In this implementation case study, we applied a monitoring system to the British Columbia drug treatment database, which holds more than 32 000 anonymised HIV genotypes for nearly 9000 residents of British Columbia living with HIV. On average, five to six new HIV genotypes are deposited in the database every day, which triggers an automated reanalysis of the entire database. We extracted clusters of five or more individuals with short phylogenetic distances betwe...
